Screen Printing Saturdays: Printers Union “Together We Can Make it Better”

March 20, 2011 § 1 Comment

Last week my friend Chris Muccioli emailed me and asked if I could help him out with his senior project by taking shots of the studio space that I worked in, focusing on my process and textures of the space. I was more than pumped to help out so I ended up making a print for it as well, that way some of the photos would be relevant to the project.

The idea behind this print was to make something that looked classically modern, if that makes any sense. I was looking to incorporate some old gears/machinery into a screen print which requires no gears or anything like that at all. The project is called Printers Union so I wanted to use the gears to show that a machine will only work if those gears are working in unison. That’s how I ended up with the little banner that says “Together We Can Make it Better”. I like to think of Nom Now as a machine sometimes, we all work together, discuss and bounce ideas off each other, to make a better final piece. So you could say that the gears represent all of us in Nom Now each one of us working together to keep everything going.

This was the first time that I used a vector texture in illustrator, I noticed that Matt Goold had been using some paper textures in his music mondays and decided that I needed to jump on that and figure out how to do it. He walked me through step by step and I finally got the look that I wanted. It just gives a controlled aged look which was nice addition, it gave the poster a little dimension not just a flat black.

I got some nice (12″ x 18″) paper from French Paper Co. and printed up 24 of these puppies so let me know if you would like one and i’ll do my best to get it to you. Also, I printed a few shirts with a simplified version of this gear logo, so if you would like one get me a shirt within the next few weeks and I’ll print one up for ya.

Below are some of the shots of the Rowan University studio space. I hope to get the hell out of there sometime soon, but until then, this is the space I’m working with.

Where Am I?
